Creator’s block

2021 has taken the creativity out of Katrine, the force behind Mending Mayhem. She's hoping that listeners who are feeling no energy to be creative can know they are in good company. As we wind down to the end of 2021, if you're creative mind is feeling worn out, you can listen to how Katrine of Mending Mayhem also felt the same way for many months this year. She tells her story so that listeners who are also feeling deflated can know they are in good company to feel this way too.

Protect your accounts

This podcast covers some simple ways you can use strong passwords on all your apps and devices to protect both your accounts and your identity. Unsolicited emails and messages and links are confidence tricks that allows scammers to steal from you. Recently the Sewover50 account received what looked like a copyright infringement notification from Instagram but it was a scam message that had a suspicious link that could have compromised all the hard work that the Judith and Sandy have done over the last 3 years. Thankfully no one clicked on the suspicious link and all is well for Sewover50. This podcast gives you some simple ways to protect yourself online. Jenny chats about the levels of protection she uses on her all of her online devices. This way she feels much safer online shopping and using an avatar to be her online gaming self.  Always feel free to directly contact the companies you think are sending your messages of demand for payments. You'll hear more about the simple ways you can protect yourself online. The podcast blog post has a number of reputable organisation that can help you be more secure online. Always feel free to contact the organisation you think has contacted you to ensure you are really dealing with the company or department that you think has sent your a demand for payment. Be sure and know the organisations your have relationships with are there to protect you from scammers.

Janene Spencer or Ooobop is one of the pattern cover models for Sew Over It. Janene was chosen to represent the SewOver50 community. SewOver50 has worked tirelessly to raise the profile of mature aged sewists for over 3 years now. Lisa Comfort of Sew Over It is the first sewing pattern company owner to dedicate a week of their social media time to recognise the SewOver50 community. Janene talks about her experience as a model for Sew Over it. This is the first opportunity she has agreed to do after so many years of avoiding situations like this is the past. Janene kindly gave us her time to record this podcast so we hope you'll enjoy hearing her story. James Munroe

James is inspired more from recycled materials and off cuts to create projects. He has sewn for many years and he combines these skills with his crafting skills. Cara Lee is a Sewover50 follower that was featured in their Chronically sewn series. Cara talks about how to make time in your limited hours of energy to be able to do the things you want to do amongst the tasks you have to do each day. There are some tools she uses to help her make better use of her sewing time. With her limited time, Cara is still able to be pattern test for about 6 pattern designers.  If it's good, then it's good enough. Cara talks about the challenges of having health issues people can't see. Denise Archer replay

As Denise Archer says, Breast cancer isn’t curable. 30% of all survivors will die from this disease because it will return—one, five or twenty years later. That’s 42 thousand BC deaths every year in the US alone. The cancer treatment causes lymphedema. A compression arm sleeve is a great reminder of our cancer survival as well as many other physical challenges breast cancer treatments affecting patients. Wendy Ward beginner sewing advice

Wendy Ward has written 4 sewing guides for beginners. If sewing masks and PPE was your first sewing experience, Wendy shares her sewing advice she gives her sewing students. Wendy began teaching in 2012 and she shares her sewing advice that will help new sewists keep developing their sewing practice. Nikki Ansell

Nikki Ansell or @itchycoopark23 lives with long covid and is one of the many SewOver50 followers who continue their sewing projects while living with chronic pain. She shares how her life has changed since March 2020. Nikki tells us about her personal losses during covid and listeners who have also experience the loss of loved ones should be aware that we talk about this between 3 and 5 minutes. This year Nikki talks about how she is living her best life and the roles sewing and crafts play in her life.

Accessibility in Sewing

We've had over 240 guests on the podcast and while we've discussed accessibility Sue Stoney identified a few gaps that we needed to discuss further.  Sue has used hundreds of patterns and this list of issues are ones that pattern designers can use to make the lives of their customers easier to follow their instructions. Using redundant queues, avoiding colour use, including sizes on pattern grade  lines, adding pattern layers, being aware of hearing loss, yellowing of the lens through age, sewn shown seated, designing for seated people, text to voice enabling to help read pdf patterns - these are some of the podcast gaps Sue Stoney identified that we needed to talk about.
