Making Zen Online Retreat

Kate Ward of Zen Stitching has arranged this online retreat with 15 expert makers to share their skills with you close up. This is a free event. Making Zen Online Retreat begins on 18 October 2021 for 5 days and the free presentations are available until Sunday 24th October. Keep up to date through the Instagram account. This is Kate's sixth podcast and this time it's to encourage you to try a new technique with all the amazing speakers - Zac Foster, Meridith Woolnough, Sarah Woodyard, Sky Pennant, Liz Hayward, Maria Theoharous, Evelyn Bourne, Andrea Tsang Jackson, Raina McDonald,  Heidi Iverson, Emma Freeman, John MacPhail, Vaina Soucy, Amy Maricle, Kaila Givehand and Kate Ward. Each day 3 videos from the makers will be published and there will be live discussions with them online.

Sew Over It embraces SewOver50

Lisa Comfort the founder of Sew Over It decided she wanted to feature SewOver50 sewists, recognising their support by Sew Over It and ensuring representation of sewists over 50 in their social media and on their newly designed pattern covers. Sew Over It is the very first sewing company to embrace SewOver50 in their social media and also on the cover of their sewing patterns. At Sew Over It they are all about stylish sewing patterns, gorgeous fabrics, easy-to-follow classes on Stitch School, a comprehensive online learning platform, and expert advice to help people learn to sew one make at a time. Their mission is simple. They want to inspire and teach as many people as possible to learn to sew and join our sewing community. These values are aligned to the SewOver50 community to encourage people to inspire and encourage each other to sew. This is an exciting milestone for the Sewover50 community. Sew Over It patterns produced since March 2020 are UK 6-30, and older popular patterns are being continually updated….perfect for the #SewingCPD @CurvyPatternDatabase challenge (sewing a size inclusive pattern).

Eleanor Thomson

Eleanor Thomson or @nelnanandnora established a facebook group for sewing flat and asymmetrical clothes. This is a safe group to share sewing knowledge as well as they surgical and cancer journeys. Eleanor set up this group while she was facing her own breast cancer journey and found that sewing helped her build her body confidence. After speaking with Eleanor, there was certainly more to her story that includes sewing among many creative pursuits and running. She's continued to give back the community helping to raise money for cancer research and creating a space to sharing sewing as well.  The Sewover50 Instagram community continues to grow because it supports their growing community of nearly 40,000 followers through their positive community values. Justinmakesmyown

Justin first started in early 2020. He made masks for his sister and since then he has continued to sew for his own needs like his new 2022 back to work clothes. Finding patterns and fabrics are a challenge and you'll find the patterns he's used are worth considering for any body. Justin does reuse and recycle fabrics, materials and projects he's made but won't get any wear out of. As Justin says, the sewing community is more than just talking about sewing. Jennie of Annie and Myras

Jeannie of Annie and Myra's is a bra sewing expert from regional Victoria. Jennie answers a few bra sewing questions so we have more information about sewing bras that fit us using the correct underwires, fabrics and bra notions to suit all skin sensitivities. She does emphasis her love of couture sewing as she discusses starting on good basic bra patterns and using basic kits you can buy from local online retailers. Jennie tells us about Free the Girls and their donating bras program.

Sewing for post mastectomy bodies

Tina or Bricolagedk is back for Sewover50 and she updates on some of the new useful patterns resources she has found to sew for a post mastectomy body.  There are many new patterns and resources to create clothes that Tina has in her sewing queue. Tina also lives with chronic fatigue and she continues to give back to the sewing community with her pattern ideas and resources both on her Instagram account, as a guest post for Sewover50 and on this podcast for Sewover50. The Sewover50 Instagram community continues to grow because it supports their growing community of over 37,000 followers through their positive community values. 

Joost FreeSewing dot org

Joost is the creator of freesewing.org Makers, designers and developers contribute to this free resources so there are sewing patterns anyone can access for free, as the name free sewing suggests. These designs have been used by previous men who sew podcasts guests Wouter.vdub and Enno Swets. FreeSewing is an open source software project with the aim of becoming the Wikipedia of sewing patterns. FreeSewing provides a core library for parametric pattern design, an ever-growing library of designs implemented in code, as well as a bunch of adjacent tools for building modern interfaces on top of our platform. FreeSewing is not interested in fashion, trends, or publishing the hot new pattern of the season. Instead, the contributors want to empower makers by distilling the knowledge of the sewing community into parametric designs + documentation, and make that information freely available. Thread Theory

Morgan and Matt of Thread Theory patterns have joined the support of Sewover50 by being part of this series about sewing for men podcast series. Thread Theory patterns is well know for providing great patterns for men and more recently for all bodies. Adrianna loves mens tailoring and has worked in the tailoring industry. This includes sewing with denim. She shares her sewing experience and provides us with her sewing advice that might surprise many listeners. Her overall advice is to give sewing a go, especially if you want to further develop your sewing skills for yourself or for the people that you love. Lolie B Yergeau

Lolie B Yergeau or Lolieya on Instagram encouraged sewists and pattern companies to provide seated photos of their patterns and makes. Lolie has adapted through her life to be independent and at times ask for help with her daily activities. She shares her favourite tools to help her sew when she has the energy to sew. On her Instagram account you can download her #sewnshownseated guidelines to help provide more photos of patterns in seated photos. This will help people who are seated and want to wear clothes to reflect who they are. The best “seat” is a simple stool because it lets us see the garments from all angles without obstruction. 

Christopher sews

Christopher is back for Sewover50's men who sew series. He is a new sewists and he's back to talk about how he's investing further into his sewing practice. In his day job he manufacturers DNA. Christopher follows many online sewing communities so that he can hear the view points of many people and learn along the way.
